The only name on the caption card is "Gandill," followed by "Wash.," so the player himself remains unidentified in the record. The Pictorial History Committee of the Society for American Baseball Research dated the picture to roughly 1912 to 1915 and tied it to Washington's team. The George Grantham Bain Collection, built by the Bain News Service in New York, supplied news photographs to newspapers during these years, and its glass negatives capture the look of early baseball portraiture: a single player, posed plainly, with little of the action shots that later became common. Pictures like this one show how the sport was documented before wire photography made the images fast and widely shared.
