Ray Morgan, a player for Washington's American League club, is pictured in this glass-plate portrait made around 1913. Washington was then a fixture in the capital, and Morgan was one of many young infielders trying to win a steady place on a roster that changed often. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, made and sold prints like this to newspapers that wanted images of ballplayers. The identification of the sitter and date rests on later research by the Society for American Baseball Research, so the caption reflects a careful reconstruction rather than an original label.
