This view of Stuyvesant Square and St. George's Church is tied by its title to the funeral of financier J. Pierpont Morgan, held in New York in April 1913. The label comes from notes made by the Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency that sent photographers out to cover the city's news, so the event and date should be read as the agency's own identification rather than independently confirmed. Morgan died in Rome that March, and his funeral drew wide public attention, with mourners from banking and society gathering around the church. The square's crowds and street scene are worth a close look for a sense of how a major funeral drew the city out.
