Eddie Foster is the ballplayer named here, shown in a 1913 glass negative as a member of the Washington American League club, which is the detail that separates this portrait from the many other baseball subjects in the Bain collection. Foster played third base and the outfield for Washington in the early 1910s, a period when the team was among the weaker sides in the American League and when photographers working for the Bain News Service were regularly sent to ballparks and studios to build a stock of sports images for newspapers. Glass negatives like this one were the standard working format of the day, and the caption information was written by Bain staff, so the identification reflects period practice. The title and date were later confirmed through research by the Society for American Baseball Research.
