A gardener in Washington, the subject named on this glass negative, belongs to the broad body of working-life pictures that the Bain News Service produced in the early twentieth century. Bain's photographers, operating out of New York, supplied newspapers with images of people and events, and their negatives were often captioned on cards with only a short title. The record gives no date, and the title is unverified, so the exact location and sitter remain uncertain. Still, the glass plate format places the picture in the years before flexible film became standard, and it offers a glimpse of ordinary labor in the city.
