Clarence "Tilly" Walker, the baseball player pictured here, was photographed in 1912, the year this glass negative was made. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with news pictures, made the negative, so it likely served as a press portrait for a daily paper. The record's location, Washington, is tied to the caption, and the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee later researched the title. Glass plates like this one are valued because they preserve the sharp detail of early 1910s news photography.
