Dolly Gray appears here as a member of the Washington ball club, identified in the caption and in later baseball-research notes on the picture. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers, made the glass negative around 1911, when the team was part of the American League and the sport was drawing large crowds to ballparks across the country. Because the agency sold its images to editors within days of taking them, its pictures capture the look of everyday press work of the period, with the player posed in uniform and the plate's small format showing the technical limits of the time.
