Confetti drifts over the rail as the liner *George Washington* pulls away from her berth, a farewell that crowds often staged for departing passengers. The ship was a North German Lloyd liner that the United States took over after 1917, and she is best remembered for carrying President Woodrow Wilson to France in December 1918 for the Paris Peace Conference. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, recorded many scenes like this one, and its glass negatives preserve the crowds and the ship's presence on the waterfront. The record gives no date, and the title comes from the agency's own unverified caption, so the exact sailing is worth checking.
