Dated 5/7/10 in the record, this glass negative shows George V in military uniform, just one day after he succeeded his father, Edward VII, who died on May 6, 1910. The George Grantham Bain Collection came from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, and its title comes from caption cards and negative data that the Library of Congress has not verified. Glass negatives were the standard working medium for press photographers of the period, so the image is worth a close look for both its subject and its technical character.
