Actress Pauline Chase is the subject of this studio portrait, made by the London firm of Alexander Bassano, a photographer favored by stage performers and society sitters in the early 1900s. Chase was best known for playing Peter Pan on the stage, a role that made her popular on both sides of the Atlantic. The Bain News Service, a New York agency, distributed press photographs of performers and public figures to newspapers, so this portrait shows how theatrical stars were circulated to the public at the time. The record's title comes from unverified agency data, but the Bassano credit and the glass negative format point to the studio's original work.
