Here Miss Myrtle Rowe poses with a baseball mitt, a prop that in 1910 signaled a sporting role still unusual for women. The picture is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, the New York photo agency that supplied news and feature pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Women's baseball at the time was mostly limited to exhibition games and novelty teams, so portraits like this were often staged to entertain readers as much as to document anything. The title comes from the agency's own caption data, which has not been independently verified, so the pose itself is the best guide to what the photographer intended.
