The caption gives the subject only as Miss I. Garibaldi, a surname that calls to mind the Italian patriot Giuseppe Garibaldi, though nothing in the record links the sitter to his family. The Bain News Service, which George Grantham Bain founded in New York, supplied photographs to newspapers in the early 1900s, and its glass negatives were labeled from caption cards that were not always checked. Because the title is unverified, the sitter's identity and the date remain open, and researchers may find more clues by comparing the negative with other Bain portraits of the period.
