Few games of 1908 carried more weight than the October 8 contest at the Polo Grounds, where the Chicago Cubs met the New York Giants in the replay that decided the National League pennant. The scene shows a dispute on the field, a moment that fit a day when every close call mattered. The image survives as a glass negative from the Bain News Service, the New York agency whose photographers covered the city's sports and news.
