Society spectators were a common sight at early aviation exhibitions, and this glass negative shows Mrs. Payne Whitney seated beside an unidentified gentleman on a flying field. The record dates the exposure to October 29, 1910, when airplane meets drew large crowds eager to see the new machines up close. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, sold images like this to newspapers, so the scene reads as a snapshot of fashionable onlookers as much as a record of the aircraft. The title comes from Bain's caption data, which has not been independently verified, so the identifications should be read with that in mind.
