The sitter here is Prince Tsia-Hsun, a member of the Qing imperial family photographed in 1910, when the dynasty was in its last years and sent princes abroad to build foreign goodwill. The companion figure is listed only as an unidentified gentleman, so the picture's record leaves his role unknown. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan press agency that sold photographs to newspapers, supplied the title on the negative or caption card, and the Library of Congress notes that this wording has not been independently verified. The image survives as a small glass negative, a format that press photographers used widely in the early twentieth century for quick portraits of visiting dignitaries.
