The young subject is Prince Leopold of Belgium, shown in a plain sailor suit, a style long popular for small boys of prosperous families on both sides of the Atlantic. Leopold later reigned as King Leopold III, though the caption identification comes from Bain News Service notes and has not been independently checked. The picture survives as a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain agency, which worked in New York from about 1900 into the 1920s and supplied photographs to newspapers. No date is recorded, so the costume is the best clue to when it was taken.
