The only name attached to this negative is "Sailor Burke," a title the Bain News Service wrote on the glass or its caption card. The Library of Congress notes that the title is unverified, so the identity of the sitter should be treated as provisional. Bain's agency supplied news pictures from New York from about 1900 into the 1920s, a period when glass plates were still common for press photography. The small format, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, reflects how such plates were made for quick reproduction in newspapers and magazines.
