The Bain News Service captioned this glass negative as a Shriners parade in Rochester, though the record flags that title as unverified and gives no date. The Shriners, formally the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, was founded in New York in 1870 and became known for elaborate public parades with members in fezzes and costumes. Bain's agency sold news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, so a picture like this shows how civic processions were recorded for readers of the period. The undated negative makes its exact year hard to pin down from the image alone.
