Cadets drilling on the parade ground at West Point show the military academy at work, with its formal ranks and disciplined lines of young men in uniform. This is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a Manhattan press agency that supplied photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negatives or cards, which has not been independently verified. Still, the image reflects a long tradition of photographing West Point, the Hudson River post where the United States Military Academy has trained army officers since 1802.
