Hoffman Island is a small island in Lower New York Bay, off the Staten Island shore, and this glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, which holds news photographs taken in New York in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the exact year of the exposure is unknown, but the Bain News Service typically supplied pictures to newspapers of that period. The island served as a quarantine station, where ships and passengers arriving in the harbor could be held and inspected for disease before they reached the city. Glass negatives like this one preserve fine tonal detail, so the picture is worth studying for the textures of the buildings and surroundings.
