The title, which the Bain News Service recorded from unverified caption cards, points to loading work at League Island, the U.S. Navy yard on the Delaware River in South Philadelphia, with "Meade" possibly naming a ship or cargo. The record gives no date, so the exact moment is uncertain. The Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency active in New York from about 1905 into the 1920s, made many such negatives of ports, ships and industrial scenes that were sold to newspapers. Its glass plates are valued today for documenting working life and everyday activity of that era.
