This glass negative shows the shotguns used at the national championship held at Travers Island, the grounds of the New York Athletic Club in Pelham, New York, named for club member William R. Travers. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact event and year are uncertain. Still, the subject fits the shooting competitions the club hosted in the early twentieth century. Bain News Service, a photo agency, made many such pictures for newspapers, so the image captures how sporting news was documented for the public at that time.
