Auto polo, a fast and rough cousin of the horseback game, was played on Coney Island in the early twentieth century, when the Brooklyn resort drew crowds for novelties of every kind. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the large body of pictures made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers across the country. The title was supplied by the agency itself and has not been independently verified, and the record gives no date, so the exact game and year remain uncertain. Still, the subject fits the period, when motorcars were new enough to be a spectacle and sporting events on the Coney Island grounds were often staged to amuse large paying audiences.
