Auto polo is a sport that never quite caught on, and this glass negative captures it in the early years of the automobile, when players swapped horses for motorcars on the field. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of work produced by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers from the early 1900s onward. The Library of Congress notes that its title rests on unverified caption information, so the exact date, location and players remain uncertain. Even so, the image is worth a close look for what it shows of a brief moment when motor vehicles were being tested in sporting contests.
