Taken at the Polo Grounds in Upper Manhattan on October 9, 1913, this view shows the scene after the third game of that year's World Series, a contest between the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Athletics. The Athletics went on to win the series four games to one, and the Polo Grounds, the Giants' home park, was a major stage for the event. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a commercial press agency that supplied newspapers and magazines with images of the day's news. Its glass negatives and caption cards give a close record of how crowds, players and ballparks looked in the early 1910s.
