Indiana poet James Whitcomb Riley, known to readers as the Hoosier Poet, appears in this portrait, which the Bain News Service labeled November 1913. Riley's verse in Midwestern dialect, including "Little Orphant Annie" and "When the Frost Is on the Punkin," made him one of the most widely read American poets of his day and a popular figure at public readings. The Bain agency, a New York press photo service, supplied pictures to newspapers and magazines, so portraits like this were often made for quick publication. The date and caption come from unverified notes, so treat November 1913 as provisional.
