A Bain News Service glass negative, titled *Strikers, Union Sq., May Day, 1913*, places a labor gathering in one of New York's best-known public squares. Union Square was a traditional site for labor and socialist rallies, and May Day was one of the days when workers filled its paving with marches and speeches. The record notes that the title comes from unverified data and gives no confirmed date, but George Grantham Bain's agency sold New York news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, so the image reflects the urban labor events editors wanted to show their readers.
