Union Square in New York was a common gathering place for labor rallies, and this glass negative from October 1912 appears to show strikers assembled there during a clothing workers' walkout. The Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers, made the negative, but its title carries a question mark, so the exact event remains unconfirmed. The autumn of 1912 brought widespread labor unrest in New York's garment trades, and pictures like this one show how workers used public squares to press their demands.
