Union Square in Manhattan, where Broadway meets Fourth Avenue, was a favorite site for rallies and public speeches, and this glass negative records a crowd gathered there. It came from the Bain News Service, the New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the specific occasion remains uncertain. Even so, it shows how large street gatherings looked before the age of mass broadcast.
