The crowd stands before the offices of the White Star Line, the British steamship company that carried passengers across the Atlantic, so the building is what marks this scene out. Bain News Service, the New York photo agency that made the glass negative, recorded street life and public gatherings like this one in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the occasion is unknown, but shipping offices of that era often drew crowds of relatives, curious onlookers, and reporters, especially around sailings or disasters when people pressed in for news of passengers.
