A horse-drawn or motor ambulance heading toward the front is the subject of this glass negative, and its title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service attached, details the record itself marks as unverified. George Grantham Bain founded the New York agency, which sold news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century and often drew on pictures from distant conflicts that American readers followed closely. Bulgaria fought in the Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913 and later in the First World War, so the image likely dates from one of those campaigns, though no date is recorded. Medical transport of this kind was central to wartime logistics, which makes the picture a useful record of how the wounded were moved from the lines.
