Officers on their way to the White House are the subject of this glass negative, a detail that sets it apart from the general run of pictures in the Bain News Service collection. The Library of Congress notes that the title comes from caption data the agency recorded, and that it has not been verified. George Grantham Bain ran his news photo service in New York in the early twentieth century, supplying newspapers with pictures of politics, military life and public events. With no firm date, the scene is best understood within that busy period of Washington news, when uniformed men moving through the executive mansion's grounds were a familiar sight for press photographers.
