The Astor House stood at Broadway and Vesey Street in lower Manhattan and was one of the city's best-known hotels after it opened in 1836. This glass negative documents its demolition, a reminder of how quickly downtown New York changed in the early twentieth century as newer commercial buildings replaced older landmarks. The record gives no date, but the Bain News Service, the press photo agency that produced the negative, was working in New York during those years. The subject alone makes the plate worth a closer look.
