The ruined house pictured here stands in Choisy-au-Bac, a village in northern France on the Aisne front, which changed hands several times during the First World War. The caption, recorded by the Bain News Service on its negative, attributes the destruction to German troops, though the record gives no verified date. Bain's agency in New York sold news photographs of the European war to American newspapers, so images like this one reached readers with little other view of the damage. The glass negative preserves fine detail in the broken masonry and empty window openings.
