Laon, a hilltop town in northern France crowned by its Gothic cathedral, is the place named in this title, which reads "Gers. in Laon." The record is unverified, so "Gers." is most likely short for "Germans," but that is not confirmed. German forces occupied Laon for much of the First World War, and wartime views of occupied French towns like this one were among the pictures the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs, sent to American newspapers and magazines.
