The record's title, "Gers. in trenches in Argonne Forest," points to German soldiers in the dense, hilly woodland of northeastern France, though the abbreviation and attribution come from unverified notes made by the Bain News Service. The Argonne saw trench fighting for much of the First World War, and in autumn 1918 it became the scene of the Meuse-Argonne offensive, the largest American operation of the war. Bain News Service was a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers, so pictures like this one were made to show readers what the front looked like. The glass negative format places the image in the era before film became common for press work.
