Jouett Shouse appears here as a named sitter, identified only by the caption cards that came with the Bain News Service negative, so the portrait's exact date remains unconfirmed. Shouse was a Kentucky-born newspaperman and Democratic Party official who later served as president of the Association Against the Prohibition Amendment. The Bain News Service, founded by George Grantham Bain in New York, supplied newspapers with news photographs of politicians, performers and public events in the early twentieth century. Portraits like this one were often made for quick publication, so they capture how public figures presented themselves to the press of their day.
