Four society women share this glass negative, identified in the title as Mrs. Jas. Blair, Mrs. B. Cochran, Mrs. Archer Huntington and Mrs. T. Roosevelt Jr. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that sold news and feature photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, produced the negative, and the names come from its caption cards, which have not been independently verified. The sitters' prominence in fashionable New York circles explains why an agency like Bain would have photographed them, and the group portrait reflects the period's taste for posed images of well-known women.
