The record identifies the sitter only as Mrs. Henry Pierson, a name taken from caption cards and negative markings that the Library of Congress describes as unverified, so the identity should be treated as provisional. The Bain News Service was a New York press photography agency, founded in 1899 by George Grantham Bain, that supplied pictures of public figures, socialites and current events to newspapers. Its glass negatives, many of them portraits, make up a large part of the library's early twentieth-century holdings. With no date recorded, the picture is best read as an example of that commercial news-photo trade.
