This glass negative carries the name Mrs. A. McKinney, though the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from unverified caption data written by the Bain News Service, so the identity of the sitter remains uncertain. The Bain agency, based in New York, sold photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, and its negatives document a wide range of people and events. Because the record gives no date, the picture is best understood through the period of the collection as a whole. Its 5 x 7 inch glass plate format was common in commercial photography of that era, and the plate itself is a useful reminder of how news images were made and circulated.
