This glass negative is catalogued under the name Camille Clifford (Bruce), though the record also lists "Mrs. J.M. J. Evans," and the library notes that the title comes from unverified caption data supplied by the Bain News Service. Clifford was a Belgian-born stage actress who became a well-known figure on the London and New York stage in the early 1900s, and she was one of the artists whose features inspired the Gibson Girl illustrations of Charles Dana Gibson. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, supplied pictures to newspapers and magazines from the late 1890s into the 1930s, so the portrait would have circulated as press material. Because the record gives no date, the negative's exact year remains uncertain.
