Clara Runkel, listed here under her married name as Mrs. Oscar F. Grab, appears in this small glass negative from the Bain News Service files. George Grantham Bain started the service in New York around 1899 to supply newspapers with photographs of people and events in the news. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption cards the service recorded, so the sitter's identity has not been independently verified. Small-format glass negatives like this one were the standard working medium of press photography in the early twentieth century, and the collection as a whole offers a broad view of that period's public life.
