The title names Henry van Dyke and his wife, though the record notes that the identification comes from caption cards the Bain News Service wrote and has not been independently verified. Van Dyke (1852-1933) was a Presbyterian clergyman, author, and Princeton professor best known for his essays and hymns, and he later served as United States minister to the Netherlands and Luxembourg from 1913 to 1916. The Bain News Service, founded in New York in 1899, supplied newspapers with fast-turnaround news photographs, so its portraits of prominent people were usually made for publication. Its glass negatives are a useful record of early twentieth-century public life.
