The record identifies its subject as the wife of Manuel II, the last king of Portugal, who was driven from the throne in the 1910 revolution and spent his exile in England until his death in 1932. The title comes from Bain News Service data that has not been independently verified, so the sitter's identity should be treated as provisional. Manuel's marriage in 1913 to Augusta Victoria of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen was a matter of wide newspaper interest, and the Bain agency, a New York news-photo service active from about 1899 to 1932, supplied such images to the press. The glass negative format reflects the period's standard for news work.
