The record gives the title King Manuel, but the Bain News Service applied that label to its negatives and caption cards without verification, so the identification deserves caution. If the sitter is Manuel II of Portugal, the picture belongs to a brief, turbulent reign. He came to the throne in 1908 after his father and elder brother were assassinated in Lisbon, and he was driven from power in the republican revolution of October 1910. Bain's New York agency sold images like this to newspapers, which made its portraits of foreign royalty a useful window on events abroad.
