Captioned as the former king of Portugal, this glass negative shows Manuel II, who came to the throne in 1908 after his father and elder brother were assassinated in Lisbon. He was deposed in October 1910, when a republican revolution ended the monarchy, and he went into exile in England, where he lived near London until his death in 1932. The Bain News Service, the New York agency whose negatives make up this collection, sold pictures of prominent figures like him to newspapers. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption cards, so the exact occasion is uncertain.
