The caption card names the Danish king, Christian X, and French President Raymond Poincaré together in this picture, though the record gives no date for the meeting. Christian X had come to the Danish throne in 1912, and Denmark stayed neutral through the First World War. Poincaré led France from 1913 to 1920, a period that covered the war and the peace negotiations. The George Grantham Bain agency, active from about 1900 to 1932, sold news photographs like this one to newspapers, which reflects the public appetite for images of statesmen.
