The name in this record, Manuel A. Esteva, is the only detail that identifies the sitter, and even that comes from caption data the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its card, which the Library of Congress has not verified. The image survives as a small glass negative, one of the many the Bain News Service produced for newspapers and magazines in New York during the early twentieth century. Because the date is unknown, the picture is best read as a record of the agency's commercial portrait work of that era, when press photographs of public figures were shared widely and carefully captioned for publication.
