This glass negative is catalogued under the name Manuel Ugarte, though the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from unverified caption data from the Bain News Service. If the identification holds, the sitter would be the Argentine writer and political essayist known for his criticism of United States expansion in Latin America and for his call for regional unity in works such as *La Patria Grande* (1910). The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, supplied press images of public figures, diplomats and visitors from the early 1900s into the 1920s, so the plate reflects the commercial portrait work of that period. Because the record lacks a firm date, the exact occasion is uncertain.
