Little beyond its title accompanies this glass negative, which the Bain News Service labeled Testing Naval Recruits, so its meaning depends largely on the setting. Bain was a New York press photo agency that sold pictures of current events to newspapers, and its negatives from the 1910s and early 1920s often show institutions expanding quickly. Navy recruiting grew sharply during the First World War, and the physical and aptitude screening of new enlistees was part of bringing large numbers of men into service. The record does not say who was tested or where, but the picture shows how that process was presented to the public at the time.
